Developing larger games

Posted by turtlesf - 2 hours ago

Hi, it's been a minute! Life happened, I got, held and was laid off from a great job, so I haven't been able to focus on making games for way too long, even though it is my passion.

Since the death of Flash, I've been focused on making larger, better games. This has meant that I haven't finished as many games in the past eight years - in no small part due to the constant disruption from my main job. However, I found a project that I will stick with until the end, and have already put 1.5 years of effort into it. I have found it way easier to consistently work on it since leaving the job.

However, one of the biggest hurdles has been the doubt that it will even be a commercial success, that it might be a dead end where it becomes clear I can't make a living doing this. I've taken month long breaks from it throughout the year to half-heartedly interview for more software jobs because of this fear.

I had an epiphany that once I finish this game, I bring my skills and experience to the next project. Through this experience, I can find ways to expedite or reuse work, and can make better judgements on whether it is worth it to hire someone on. The growth potential of this is hard to measure, but it means being able to do this as a career doesn’t ride or die on this one game doing well.
